Mikumi and Selous - Gems of the South
This holiday takes in two of Southern Tanzania’s most diverse and beautiful areas – Selous Game Reserve and Mikumi National Park. With game drives boat trips and an exciting guided walk, this is certainly not your typical safari!Selous Game Reserve is named after European explorer Frederick Selous, and is one of the world’s largest protected wildlife reserves, as well as being a UN World Heritage Site. This wild, pristine and uninhabited area is larger than Switzerland, so there will be plenty for you to take in during your safari! The parks landscape features savannah, woodland, grassy plain and rocky outcrops, as well as the fantastic Rufiji River and its tributaries. You will take in the river and its resident hippo and crocodile from what is surely the best vantage point – a boating safari.
Equally delightful is the Mikumi National Park. Situated in a stunning corner of the earth, between the Uruguru Mountains and the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, Mikumi’s proximity to the wonderful Selous Game Reserve means that it is densely populated with various game, including a large variety of bird species, giraffe, buffalo, elephant, zebra, wild dog, hartebeest, wildebeest, python, warthog, eland and various antelope. Close to the watering holes, lion, hippo and even leopard can sometimes be spotted.
Vuma Hills and Rufiji River
The accommodation on this tour has been specially selected to offer something really unique to all geusts visiting this stunning part of Africa. The Rufiji River Camp consists of 20 luxury tented camps in the heart of Selous Game Reserve. Each of the en suite tents is grouped around a central bar, restaurant and library area, which all offer fantastic views over the river. Here, you can wine and dine, as you spot crocodiles and hippos!
Vuma Hills Tented Camp, meanwhile, is a luxury tented camp which perches just above the trees. From their private, shaded wooden verandas, guests can enjoy beautiful views of the beautiful surrounds. All meals are prepared using fresh produce from the camp's own highlands farm - so why not take a cool dip in the outdoor pool after a long hot game drive, before enjoying a delicious dinner and settling down for the evening on your veranda, cold beer in hand?
