Sparkling water, plummeting crater, and huge baobab trees
This safari is really something quite special. You will spend three glorious weeks exploring the fantastic north as well as the remote south, encountering not only Tanzania’s amazing wildlife but also the wonderful people. This tour is the ultimate in wildlife viewing and authentic cultural encounters. After your initial overnight in Arusha, you will begin your safari at Lake Manyara, where you will delight at the natural beauty and, if you’re lucky, maybe spot a tree-climbing lion. On the course of the tour you will visit two further lakes – Lake Natron, where you will marvel at the sheer number of flamingos which feed on the zooplankton of the alkaline waters, and Lake Victoria, where you can let the relaxed pace of life wash over you, like the waves lapping the shore.
There is certainly no shortage of wonderful wild creatures to spot on this tour. Thousands of elephant reside at Tarangire, but even they are dwarfed by the huge baobab trees which dot the landscape. The density of wildlife to be found in the Ngorongoro Crater is simply unparalleled and, with its 2000ft high walls, this ancient volcanic caldera (collapsed volcano) will simultaneously delight and defy the senses. The Serengeti is Tanzania’s most famous national park, and not without reason – this vast area is home to the “Big Five”, along with wildebeest, lion, elephants, giraffe, zebra, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many other bird species. At Selous, the Rufiki River is a haven for hippo and crocodile.
A truly amazing yet sadly overlooked aspect of Tanzania is the wonderful, diverse and hospitable people. On this tour, this aspect will not go ignored. At Lake Victoria, you will take a delightful fishing trip with local fishermen, who will demonstrate their traditional fishing methods, little changed after so many years, and sing songs of old about home, cattle and daily life. At Eyasi, you will encounter the hunter-gatherer Hadzabe Bushmen. There is much to learn from these indigenous peoples on the flora and fauna of the surrounding area. They are some of the last people on earth to live truly harmoniously with nature.
For those of you who like to keep active, and really get out there and really experience the sights, sounds and authentic sense of country, worry not. There are plenty of chances to get out of your safari vehicle and feel the real Tanzania. At Lake Victoria, you will see the women toiling in the fields as you learn about fishing from a local fisherman. At Natron, you will take a guided walk around the lake and, weather permitting, hike to the source of the Ngare Sero River. Weather permitting, you can even swim in the river and stand under the cascading waterfalls, cooling down and feeling the fresh water on your back. At Mikumi you will take an exciting walking safari, and at the Udzungwa mountains, you can have a day of rather challenging but supremely rewarding hiking through pristine rainforest. You can explore forest and waterfalls, swim in natural plunge pools, and even go on a night walking safari to look for the endemic chameleons.
This is not your average safari. If you’re not the average tourist, then this might just be the right tour for you.
