The Marangu route is one of the most popular routes to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Though it is possible to complete this climb in 5 days, we would always recommend taking the extra acclimatisation day, making this an enjoyable and rewarding hike with a greatly increased chance of reaching the summit. This route also allows hikers the relative luxury of sleeping in mountain huts along the entire route.

You will begin with your transfer to Marangu Gate, where you will complete all registration and necessary formalities. Your climb begins in earnest through montane forest – almost magical with clinging mists, beard-like mosses and the occasional antelope darting off upon your approach.

After leaving the forest belt, the scenery turns to afro-alpine grassland and moorland, becoming ever more spectacular and somehow alien. Giant lobelia and giant groundsel, towering above you with heights of 3,4,or even 5 metres, dot the landscape. The surroundings become even more barren as you enter the Alpine and get even closer to your goal of the summit.

You will make your summit attempt on either day 4 or 5, depending on whether you take the recommended acclimatisation day or not. This begins with a mid-night wake-up for a hot drink and some biscuits. It is now that the landscape turns from eroded stone to snow, and after some hours of tough ascent, you will reach the peak early in the morning – the views and bright sunshine the supreme reward for your efforts! Take pictures and a very short rest and enjoy the view.

Your descent begins that same day and, after an evening of rest and relaxation, continues the next.

The price includes a pre-climb overnight in Arusha. Depending on your schedule and wishes we can also offer pre-climb accommodation in Moshi or Marangu

Day 1: Arrival

Rivertrees Country Inn

Pick up from Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Rivertrees Country Inn (or alternative accommodation at Marangu or Moshi) for rest, recuperation and overnight before your climb

Day 2: Marangu Gate - Mandara

Mandara Hut

Full Board

Pick up from your hotel in Marangu, Moshi or Arusha
Drive to Marangu Gate where you will complete all park formalities
Start climbing throughm mountainous rainforest to the first hut - Mandara
Dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut (8,860ft)

Day 3: Mandara - Horombo

Horombo Hut

After breakfast, ascend through the afro-alpine grassland and moorland
Views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks along the way, weather permitting
Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut (12,140ft)

Day 4: Acclimatization day at Horombo

A day of rest and acclimatization at Horombo Hut
Soft trekking around Horombo can be enjoyed, and there is also the option to walk to Zebra Rock or East Lava Hill
Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut

Day 5: Horombo - Kibo Hut

Further ascent to Kibo Hut
En route the landscape will become very barren, stony and erroded. Spectacular plant specimens such as giant groundsel and lobelia dot the landscape

Day 6: Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak

Today will mark your summit attempt
Wake up at around midnight for a quick snack of tea and biscuits
Proceed on the route to the summit through Gilman's Point at 18,640ft.
A total of some 6-7 hours tough hiking to reach the summit around dawn
After a very short break and some picture taking, begin the descent to Kibo Hut for some rest, and then onto Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight

Day 7: Horombo - Marangu Gate

Bed and Breakfast

After breakfast, continue on the descent
Bid farewell to your guides and porters, before transferring back to your Marangu, Moshi or Arusha hotel
