Tanzania; rugged peaks, wild creatures, azure waters...and unparalleled hospitality
This special tour really does offer everything - a mountain-trekking challenge, the chance to watch the sun rise over Africa from the top of its highest mountains, wild animals in their natural habitat, days on the beach to soak up the sun, and the opportunity to soak up the culture and atmosphere of a famous old town. This tour really does start on a high – 19,640ft, to be precise. Your first days in Tanzania will be spent summiting the huge, brooding Mount Kilimanjaro. You’ll hike through montane forest, trek across beautiful heath land, camp at the bottom of a plummeting valley, marvel at the unique and somehow alien mountain flora, and finally reach the Uhuru Summit to watch a new day dawn on Tanzania to the south, and Kenya to the north.
After your descent from the mountain, you will continue into Tanzania’s wilderness and take in the best the northern circuit has to offer.
You will start your safari in Lake Manyara – a truly lovely national park with tropical forests of giant fig and mahogany trees. This park is well known for the bizarre tree-climbing habits of the lion which reside there, and if you’re lucky, you might just spot one, along with elephant, giraffe, zebra, buffalo, monkeys and many more fantastic creatures.
The Serengeti, where you will spend your next few days on safari, is vast, beautiful, and above all wild. Here you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephant, giraffe, zebra, monkeys, baboons, various grazers and hundreds of bird species. Little wonder that this park is so very famous around the world.
Your last day on safari before taking your beach extension will be spent at the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You will take a truly amazing game drive at the bottom of the Ngorongoro Crater – a huge and ancient crater created from a collapsed volcano. The walls are 2000ft high, meaning very few animals migrate in and out of the crater. This natural wildlife sanctuary is home to thousands of animals, including all the “Big Five”, plus zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes and myriad bird species.
After your mountain climbing and safari excitement, you will spend four blissful days relaxing on the pristine beaches of East Africa’s most exotic island – Zanzibar. Swim, sun, sand, and a pleasant ocean breeze to cool you down. What more could you need to relax and let your troubles go?
Your final two nights will be spent taking in the culture, atmosphere and architecture of Stone Town – the historical centre of Zanzibar’s biggest town. Arabic, African and Portuguese; all three influences are apparent in each aspect of Stone Town life – the architecture, the food, the language and of course the abundance of aromatic spices.
By way of introduction, you will be taken on the famous Spice Tour, where you will explore the spice plantations and learn all about the erstwhile backbone of the Zanzibari economy. You will also learn about organic herbs and their uses in cosmetics, medicines and of course cookery. We will also take you on a city tour, to the Palace Museum, the House of Wonders, the Arab fort, bustling markets and countless curio and antique shops.
Stunning accommodation in stunning surroundings
Throughout your 18-day adventure you will find your accommodation comfortable, luxurious, unique and of course hospitable. At Rivertrees you can simply inhale the fresh country air, delight at the fresh flowers growing outside your window, enjoy a hearty breakfast and take a gentle stroll in the expansive countryside surrounding the establishment. A better place to start a safari journey could hardly be imagined.
Your tented camp accommodation is a far cry from traditional camping – in Kirurumu and Mapito you are in no way slumming it! Dining on fine china, dozing off in soft and comfortable sheets, and gazing upon the stunning scenery in which this camp is located, you will appreciate all the little luxurious touches which make your stay in the bush extra-comfortable.
The Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge offers perfect views over the Ngorongoro Crater – sometimes referred to as the eighth wonder of the world. Watching the sun set here, with a cold beer or hot coffee in hand, is one of the ultimate safari experiences!
Your beach extension will be spent at The Zanzibari Hotel – a delightful boutique hotel on Zanzibar’s beautiful north east cost. Nestling in lush gardens with brightly-coloured blooms and the odd little lizard darting around, all rooms are air conditioned and offer sea views. The outdoor infinity pool is the ultimate place to cool down from the hot afternoon sun and enjoy a cold drink.
Your final nights in Zanzibar will be spent in the Zanzibar Coffee House, a lovely boutique hotel in the heart of Zanzibar’s old town. Each individually styled room is comfortable and elegant, and all guests enjoy relaxing here, taking organic coffee on the rooftop breakfast terrace and soaking up Stone Town’s singular atmosphere.
