Appreciate the picturesque beauty of the majestic, snowcapped Mount Kenya and the riverbank oasis of Samburu National Park. The snow and ice of Mount Kenya are a peculiar phenomenon, unexpected so close to the earth’s equator, yet vitally important to the local ecosystem, which includes the Samburu Wildlife Reserve.

The waters that flow from Mount Kenya create a refuge for hundreds of different animal species at Samburu, many of which are rare and exotic. This safari highlights the intense beauty of these natural wonders and reveals their distinct purpose in the region.

Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa, stands approximately 93 miles north/northeast of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi and is an important source of water for much of Kenya. Although Mount Kenya is close to the equator in the tropical heat of East Africa, the peaks of the mountain are covered in snow and ice, and there are currently 11 small glaciers on the mountain, making it an awe-inspiring attraction.

The Samburu National Park is an equally unique wildlife reserve starting at the banks of the Uaso Nyiro (or Ewaso Ngiro) River which flows from the glaciers of Mount Kenya to sustain animal life in the midst of this very hot, dry region. These gorgeous wonders of nature are not only beautiful to behold, but play an integral role in the wellbeing of the people and wildlife of Kenya, making them as inspirational as they are spectacular.

The Mount Kenya Serena Mountain Lodge boasts a tunnel with photographic hide as well as a central dining room sitting at tree level - where else could you gaze across the canopy whilst enjoying international dishes made from local produce with a fine imported beer? The views at the Samburu Sopa Lodge are different but equally stunning. Here, each room has private verandas with views of the wide, expansive plains, and a floodlit watering hole where wildlife can be spotted.

Day 3: Samburu - Buffalo Spring
