Reviews & Testimonials of Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge
"Best lodge of the safari"
We stayed here after spending a night at Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge and before Seronera Wildlife Lodge (Serengeti) and Ikoma Bush Camp (Serengeti) and this place blew the others out of the water. The view of the crater was incredible, the rooms were huge, well heated (very important up on the crater rim in the winter) and very comfortable with nice hot showers. The there was good food variety although the food wasn't exceptional. The staff was very friendly. The bar, restaurant, and rooms were all comfortable. My only complaint was that it felt too resort-y for such a naturally beautiful location.ekanator from Boston, United States
"Sooooo pa-fect!"
I'm not typically a fancy traveler but after climbing Kilimanjaro, summiting and spending seven days in the wilderness, the Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge was just what the shaman ordered. We had spent the first day on safari entirely in Ngorongoro National Park, and while it was exciting and fun, were dusty and tired (as we were still recovering from the trek) as our Jeep pulled up into the lodge, located in the park. What an oasis it was! Cold juices and warm towels as soon as we walked into a lushly decorated lobby that was sprawling and spacious. Tastefully endowed with local craft and furniture, there was a fire softly glowing, complementary coffee and tea, and deck chairs on the patio to watch the sunset, overlooking the pool. Let's see, what else could we possibly ask for?
Well, how about a luxuriously roomy room complete with full floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the park, and a rocker to settle in to? The room felt like a suite, with a large foyer and trunks at the foot of each bed. The bathroom was just as comfortable - to be sure, there were only certain times of the day when hot water was available and if you got in the shower towards the tail end of that window, you might just get warmish cool water, it's really the least of your concerns with everything else so wonderful.
Being a lodge in the middle of a national park, food and drink within the hotel are your only dining options. Dinner is a set menu with a few choices, and it wasn't mindblowing. It was OK, and nothing a glass or two of good red couldn't help go down. Service was extremely personable with individual attention, and there was even the pleasant surprise of a few local songs performed by the staff in the middle. The bar also had some great tenders and waiters and the next morning's buffet breakfast was as good as we got in Tanzania. The only shortcoming of our stay? That we didn't have an entire day at the lodge just to enjoy it.
There is paid Internet available in the lobby should you feel the need to be connected and a pretty well-stocked gift store. But honestly, the lodge has everything you need - just bring yourself, a great book, and happy thoughts.
