Reviews & Testimonials of Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge

"Impressed by the views and overall quality"

The lodge is conveniently located between the entrance and exit gates of the caldera (closer to the entrance, a plus if the game-drive starts early in the morning). Since the lodge is at the edge of the crater, the rooms have an outstanding view. We stayed in connected rooms at the top floor where the views are even better.

The bar and lunch area has huge glass walls, so having some cocktails/snacks with live African music before the 18:30 show was very relaxing. The shows (acrobats in first night and Masai dance/chanting in the second) are worthwhile to watch and very popular. So get your seats early !

The dinner four-course menu always had interesting options, and lunch is buffet-style. Both were very good, with a mix of western and African choices.

The heaters in the rooms worked very well, and the hot water bottle kept us warm in bed. The hot water bladder was a very good idea that we will copy in winters back home.

The gift shop had a better assortment than in the other Serenas, and Masai women were allowed to sell their articles inside the hotel as well. Just like in the other Serenas in Serengeti and Manyara, the prices were fair compared to local shops.

The only minor negative point is that wireless internet connection was not available.

"Good value for those looking for less luxe in a safari vacation"

Rhino Lodge reminded me of National Park Lodges in the United States: basic, clean, and no more or less than you need when in a wilderness area. We were looking for a more budget-friendly option when we booked our safari in Ngorongoro and Serengeti.

The location is fine. It is near the rim, but not on the rim. Friends who had stayed in a lodge on the crater rim on a previous trip advised us against paying high prices for the crater rim hotels. The fogs and mists in the evenings and mornings mean that you don't have much of a view from a crater rim lodge during the time that you are there.

We found the rooms pleasant, simple and clean. We were most surprised by the ample hot water in the showers, a very nice surprise. The restaurant area is pleasant and comfortable, and has some beautiful books to peruse in the evening. The staff were pleasant enough, and service was fine. We felt very comfortable staying here with our local safari guide and sharing meals with him. Apparently, this can be a problem at higher end lodges where local guides are treated as second-class citizens. Not a problem at Rhino.

We had no problems with safety during our stay. Given previous reviews, we took care not to leave valuables in the room.

"Excellent stay and very good food"

Stayed her on the last night of our safari. It's not overlooking the crater, but the hotels overlooking the crater are in a whole other price bracket. This hotel had nice rooms with comfortable beds and the best showers (hot water and great pressure) that we had on our whole trip. The dinner and the breakfast were both also very good and the staff were very helpful and attentive. I would definitely recommend this place.
