Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

Upon entering Tarangire National Park for the first time, the vast baobab trees which pepper the landscape will be the first thing to catch your eye.  But, once you’ve gotten used to the initial shock of a giraffe or even an elephant dwarfed beneath one of these colossal trees, you will discover so much more in this stunning corner of Tanzania.

There are a huge number of elephant found in this park, along with wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and African python – in fact, this national park offers the highest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania outside of the Serengeti ecosystem.  Ornithologists will love Tarangire, with birds such as Kori bustard, ostrich, hornbill and lovebird all resident here.

Towards the end of the rainy season, Tarangire is particularly good for elephant-spotting, as the elephant gather.  During the dry season, it is the Tarangire River which provides the only permanent source of water to Tarangire’s wildlife – this is a great place to watch the animals drinking.
