Rediscover your childhood...
Kenya is a natural playground for adults and children alike. Getting back to nature, learning the fundamentals of life out in the bush, the thrill of spotting wild creatures in their natural habitat...you don't have to be a kid to relish those things!Your once-in-a-lifetime family holiday will start off in Nairobi. You can rest and recuperate after your journey in one Nairobi's most charming hotel before you start to explore some of the city's most famous and rewarding sites. The Giraffe Centre at Langata, established in 1979 and originally intended to reduce the plight of the endangered Rothschild's giraffe in Kenya, is now home to a bird sanctuary and a nature trail, where you can see warthog, hyenas and of course giraffe wandering the dense bush and forest. A visit to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage is another worthwile excursion, where you can witness first hand how loved and well taken care of these unfortunate elephant calves really are.
Your next few days at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy will be equally enlightening. You can visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where the chimps will gather to gaze at you as curiously as you gaze at them! You can also visit the black rhino sanctuary, where Ol Pejeta is doing fantastic work to protect and conserve these amazing beasts.
At Lake Naivasha, you can take an exciting boat trip on the lake after a delightful afternoon tea (many say the very best in Kenya) at Elsamere former home to Joy Adamson. A boat safari is the ultimate way to take in this stunning part of Africa - getting close to the hippos and watching the ungainly pelicans and the swooping fish eagles snatch fish from the waters. This corner of Kenya is also home to Hell's Gate National Park, where you and your family will take a guided walking safari amongst the buffalo, grazers and bearded vultures.
Your final days in the bush will be spent in the Masai Mara. The sheer diversity of wildlife and landscape here will delight all safari-goers, regardless of age. Here, during your two days of private game drives, you will have the best chance of spotting the "Big Five". There is little more exciting and awe-inspiring than watching the sun rise over the endless golden plains, before watching it set in a blaze of red and orange, signalling the end to another African day.
...or relish some alone time
Each relaxed and unique accommodation featured in this package was selected with family's specific needs in mind. The Holiday Inn Nairobi is a charming, comfortable and unpretentious establishment – the perfect base for exploring the city's most inspiring wildlife conservation initiatives. With two outdoor pools, a sauna and a steam bath, as well as satellite television in all guest rooms, the whole family will find something perfect for winding down after a long active day.The Sweetwaters Tented Camp in Ol Pejeta is another delight. The floodlit watering hole, directly visible from the lounge and dining area, attracts a host of wildlife each night and day. Expect to see antelope, gazelle, zebra, warthog and marabou storks. Very rarely, a black rhino might even come to drink, alarming the other animals!
Similarly surrounded by wild animals and stunning scenery is the Naivasha Sopa Lodge. The vast, cottage-style rooms at this magical establishment are perfect for any family. There is a large lounge area facing bay windows and a small patio area – perfect to watch the resident waterbuck and giraffe as they graze and browse in the surrounding landscape. The fact that there are no boundaries around this camp add to the feeling that you are really out in the wild! For this very reason, you will need a lodge guide to escort you to and from dinner each night, in case a night-prowling hippo emerges from the lake and strays into your path. It certainly gives your evening meal an exciting edge! Children will also love swimming in the large outdoor pool, whilst parents can relax on the sun deck.
Finally, the Siana Springs is another family haven. Here, children of all ages can enjoy one of the two clubs specifically for younger guests – the Aventurers' Club for under-12s and the Young Rangers' Club for over-12s. Here, children can enjoy safari-themed obstacle courses, try a little bush orientation and learn about plant and bird species – all under the guidance of experienced professionals. Meanwhile, parents can enjoy a relaxed afternoon coffee or a cold evening beer!
