Tanzania's Wild South
Tanzania’s stunning south, though perhaps not as well-known as the Northern Circuit, is diverse, beautiful, packed with game and well worth exploring. This particular itinerary is perfect for those looking for a safari out of Dar Es Salaam, and for those who wish to take a relaxing beach extension in Zanzibar after their wildlife adventure! After your overnight in Tanzania’s major coastal city – Dar Es Salaam – you will start your safari proper. Journeying to Selous, your first safari experience will be something truly magical – two boating safaris on the wonderful Rufiji River, home to many crocodiles and hippo; a walking tour across the rolling savannah, open grassland and rocky outcroppings, to take in the real sights and sounds; game drives where you could spot elephant, buffalo, rhino, wildebeest, eland, giraffe, zebra, leopard, lion, and over 350 species of bird!
At Mikumi National Park, the excitement and action will continue. As it is part of the wider Selous ecosystem, Mikumi boasts a very high concentration of game, including buffalo, elephant, lion, wild dog, hippo, hartebeest, wildebeest, warthog and a variety of antelope. There are several observation towers dotting the landscape, from which you can gaze over the national park in its entirety.
At Udzugwa Mountain National Park, you will take a half-day of hiking and bird-watching through pristine rainforest. Upon reaching the Sanje waterfalls, your reward will be the spectacular views of the Kilombero Valley below.
Your last few days on safari will be spent at Ruaha National Park. During your three full days of safari activity, you will marvel at the views of the Great Ruaha River, delight at the sight of crocodiles and hippo, spot elephant, various antelopes and a whole host of bird species, and try to take in the sheer size of this wild and wonderful corner of the earth.
Comfort and Hospitality in the Wilderness
Your first overnight will be spent in Dar Es Salaam's Moevenpick Royal Palms - right in the heart of the city centre, this classy and elegant establishment is the perfect place to rest and freshen up after your long journey.Throughout your safari journey you will find yourself overnighting ins some of Africa's most beautiful locations. The Rufiji River Camp, for example, consists of 20 luxury tented camps in the heart of Selous Game Reserve, with an amazing setting overlooking the Rufiji River. Here, you can wine and dine as you spot crocodiles and hippos! Sable Mountain Lodge, meanwhile, houses guests in cottages or tented bandas, each of which have private verandas offering views over the forest towards the Uluguru Mountains.
Dining and drinking at your specially selected accommodation will be fresh, varied, satisfying and of course delicious. Vuma Hills prepares dishes using fresh produce from the camp's own highland farm. Sable Mountain Lodge has several eating and drinking options, including the delightful treehouse overlooking a watering hole, where various animals can be spotted drinking!
All accommodation on this tour is comfortable, luxurious and completely unique.
