Mount Kenya and Aberdares
Behold the awe-inspiring beauty of the mountains of East Africa on a safari to snow-capped Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range. Located approximately 93 miles north/northeast of the Kenyan capital of Nairobi and the source of the name of the Republic of Kenya, Mount Kenya is the second highest mountain in Africa (after Mount Kilimanjaro). The heavily forested Aberdare Range is located between Mount Kenya and Nairobi, and forms a section of the eastern rim of the Great Rift Valley. The mountains of Kenya are some of the most beautiful in the world, and a safari to Mount Kenya and the Aberdares will refresh and revitalize your body and mind.
Many tourists are surprised to learn that Mount Kenya is a snow and ice-capped mountain, especially so close to the equator. However, with peaks over 17,000 feet high, the climate at that altitude makes such a natural phenomenon possible, even in this tropical region of East Africa. The Aberdare Range has an average elevation of 12,000 - 13,000 feet above sea level, and much of it is protected by the surrounding Aberdare National Park. A wonderful attraction for hikers and climbers, the lush forests of the Aberdare Range creates a spectacular atmosphere that appeals to the senses.
