Location: Amboseli
Amboseli National park is undoubtedly the best place to see free-ranging elephants in the whole of Kenya, and with its enviable setting against the glorious Mount Kilimanjaro, this corner of Kenya seems at once other-wordly yet quintessentially African. The award-winning Tortilis Camp, named after the flat-topped thorny acacia tortilis tree, is situated in the heart of Amboseli's rugged expanses. Here, you will discover an authentic safari experience which does not compromise on luxury, comfort or style. Each of the 17 spacious tents at Tortilis is watched over by the brooding Mount Kilimanjaro, and shaded and protected by a charming makuti-thatched roof. The tents consist of one main bedroom with wooden flooring, permanent en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, stone floors, shower and flush toilet, and one spacious veranda with comfortable and charming furnishings.
The family house at Tortilis is utterly stunning. The two bedrooms (one double, one twin) branch out from the central living area – an open-walled space with beautiful ornaments, interesting artefacts and top-quality furnishings. This is this ideal place to relax with a good book, drink in the stunning view of the plains or enjoy an afternoon nap with a comforting cool breeze. Both bedrooms are en suite, with the master bedroom boasting a wonderful sunken bathtub.
Activities available at Tortilis, all of which are led by professional guides, include game drives in 4x4 Land Rovers, guided bush walks, bush breakfasts, cultural visits and excursions to the Cynthia Moss Elephant Research Centre. Guests can also enjoy swimming in the pool, sundowner cocktails and indulgent massages.
