Location: Shompole Conservancy
Shompole is an accommodation experience like no other. Located in a private conservancy on the edge of the Nguruman Escarpment bordering with Tanzania, it overlooks the endless plains and rolling volcanic hills of the Great Rift Valley. The décor incorporates natural materials, smooth white plaster walls and, most interestingly, water. Everything about Shompole is designed to work openly and in harmony with it's surroundings, whilst simultaneously wowing the senses with its striking innovation and stunning design. The “rooms” are more like large, open platforms, giving out onto breathtaking views of the conservancy. Here, you can sip a cool drink in the shade enjoying panoramic savannah views, seek relief from the midday sun in a private plunge pool, or even drift off at night with your head on a deep white pillow, listening to the roar of a distant lion.
For those of you who delight in relaxation and tranquillity, Shompole offers massages and beauty treatments on the deck overlooking the large, clear pool, an extensive range of beers wines and spirits, a butler service and even fine cigars. You can take a romantic candle-lit bush dinner under the starry African sky, or even breakfast in the cool, tranquil shade of the nearby fig forest.
However, if you're feeling adventurous, you can try a game drive (day and/or night), mountain biking or guided walks through the shaded fig forest. Lake Natron is simply surrounded by flamingos, and desert roses grow freely on the surrounding lakeshores. A community initiative working with local Masai people means you can take a trip to Shompole village Market or even a bead hut, all the while under the guidance of a knowledgeable local Masai.
