Location: Tsavo West
This camp is sited around natural springs around the south-western edge of Tsavo West, where crocodiles and hippo splash. Named after the aristocrat who introduced royalty to the bush, Finch Hattons Tented Lodge is largely considered one of the classiest and most accomplished of Kenya's tented camps: fine bone china, cut crystal glasses, chandeliers, Mozart on a gramophone...Finch Hattons truly is the place to relive the elegant safari of a bygone era.Finch Hattons 50 tents, constructed on elevated platforms for optimising views of the surrounding springs and forest, are spacious, luxurious and fully-equipped with en suite bathrooms featuring WC, hot and cold running water and showers, as well as fully stocked mini-bar and hair-dryers. Décor is characterised by taste and old-style elegance, with brass lamps, Afghan rugs and period writing desks. You can spend a hot afternoon relaxing on the day bed on your private outdoor decking area.
Breakfast and lunch are served al fresco on the dining terrace, which affords views of the hippo pool with Mount Kilimanjaro looming in the background - the perfect way to start a day in Kenya. Guests will enjoy their six-course dinners in the elegantly appointed dining room, where ties are excused but gentlemen are requested to wear long trousers. With an extensive wine cellar stocked with imported wines, guests can find the perfect accompaniment to their fresh, fine food.
Early morning, mid-morning and afternoon game drives are taken in customised open-sided 4WD vehicles and are very popular with Finch Hattons guests. Escorted nature walks and day excursions can also be arranged.
For those who simply want to relax at the camp or cool off between game drives, the large outdoor swimming pool with sun deck is pleasantly shaded by indigenous trees. The library and reading room on the mezzanine floor is furnished with comfortable arm chairs and stocked with various books and a selection of classical music.
