Location: Lake Naivasha
Elsamere is the wonderfully charming former home of Joy and George Adamson. These two pioneers of wildlife conservation provided us with one of the most incredible wildlife success stories of all time – that of Elsa, the orphaned lioness cub who was raised by the Adamson's before her successful release into the wild. Elsa's story was published in 1960 as Born Free, all the royalties and proceeds of which were reinvested by the Adamsons into The Elsa Wild Animal Appeal, which later became The Elsa Conservation Trust. After the tragic deaths of both Joy and George Adamson, Elsamere was bequeathed to the Elsa Trust. It's location on the southern shore of Lake Naivasha is unrivalled in terms of natural beauty. The area is a true haven for wildlife, with black-and-white colobus monkeys scampering in the trees, and hippos, elands and zebra grazing on the lawns at night. There are over 260 species of bird in the area, including several rare species.
Those lucky enough to stay at Elsamere will be accommodated in one of four cottages, each of which have en suite bathroom facilities and verandas with a lake view. Guests and day visitors alike can feel free to visit the museum and browse the shop, enjoy an al fresco lunch on the beautiful lawns, or delight in what is often regarded as the best afternoon tea in Kenya!
Elsamere has its own boats for bird-watching trips and excursions to the fantastic Crescent Island – a wildlife haven in the middle of Lake Naivasha. Hell's Gate National Park, the geothermal power station, the volcanic Crater Lake and the stunning Lake Nakuru are all within easy day-trip distance.
