Che Shale is a group of beach bandas just 20 minutes north of the main Malindi beach on Kenya's coast. It describes itself as stylish, simple and secluded. This is the kind of place where people come to kick of their shoes, escape complicated modern life and completely let go of their worries. The whole Che Shale property is built with renewable local materials. You won't find any mod cons or plastic here – just palm trees, doum palms, coconut fibre and mango wood. The furniture and interior design is by Milanese designer Marzia Chicherretti, who has used local materials (as well as local talent) to create a sense of inviting comfort, simple charm and unpretentious luxury.
Each of Che Shale's beach bandas are named after Swahili fish, and each differs slightly from the rest. The various bandas can accommodate anything from 2 to 6 people. Each has an en suite bathroom with outdoor shower, private veranda with day bed and over-sized cushions – perfect to simply lie back and unwind!
The restaurant offers fresh seafood, barbecued meat, home made pasta and more. Guests delight at the Che Shale special signature dishes, such as seaweed in batter and chilli jam. Breakfast is a selection of fruit, breads and cereals as well as bacon, eggs, pancakes and toast. Lunch is an a la carte affair, and dinner is a three-course set menu which changes daily. Sample dishes include Zanzibar-style calamari, crab and coconut soup, greek salad, spaghetti vongole and coconut pudding.
Activities at Che Shale include world-renowned kite-surfing in ideal conditions, surfing, scuba-diving, snorkelling and deep sea fishing. Should you wish to venture a little further out, excursions can be arranged to Malindi Town, the ancient Gede Ruins and the Giriama cultural village, amongst other destinations. For a more action-packed,thrilling excursion, guests can visit the Sabaki river mouth, the Watamu and Malindi marine parks, Arabuko-Sokoke forest and even a snake and crocodile farm.
