Best time to visit Kenya
All the national parks and game reserves in Kenya are a delight to visit the whole year round, but a few insider tips can help you make an informed decision and get the most from your safari trip.
The classic safari season is from July to October, during the annual Great Migration. Thousands upon thousands of wildebeest, zebra and other grazers make their long and treacherous journey in search of pastures new. At whatever point you come across them, it really is a spectacle to behold.
The hottest months tend to be January and February, and at this time animals will congregate around bodies of water making them easier to spot. This does, however, tend to be the busiest time of year, so if you’d prefer things to be a bit quieter try visiting, for example, Amboseli National Reserve from June to October. This is Amboseli’s second dry season, and the thinning vegetation will make animals more conspicuous.
For a reference of when it’s more likely to rain, take a look at our climate section. But do note that even if you do visit during rainy season, you should still be able to get around on your safari as most roads are good. Just remember to pack a poncho!
